ASHRAE Society Scholarship Winner
Subject: Congratulations to William Karels – ASHRAE Society Scholarship Winner!
Dear South Dakota ASHRAE Members,
We are thrilled to share some exciting news from our student chapter at South Dakota State University. William Karels, an active student member, has been awarded the Duane Hanson Scholarship at the ASHRAE Society level—a prestigious honor and a testament to his hard work and dedication. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as William may be the first student from South Dakota to apply for and receive a Society-level scholarship!
William will be working in the Sioux Falls area this summer with ISG, so if you see him around, please join us in congratulating him on this outstanding accomplishment.
Additionally, if your company is hosting interns this summer who will be working in HVAC, plumbing, or related industries, please reach out and let us know. Gathering this information helps our chapter better support students, stay competitive nationally, and grow our local network of future industry leaders.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement with the South Dakota ASHRAE Chapter.
Best regards,
Austin Eigenberg

President Message
Chapter Meeting: Local Chapter Dues
Chapter member,
At the end of this ASHRAE year the Board of Governors reviewed many different items. Chief among them is the chapter’s current finances and operating costs.
Due to the increased cost to operate the chapter the Board of Governors has elected to increase local chapter dues to $130 per member per year. Our chapter dues have not been increased since the 2011-2012 chapter year.
Thank you for the opportunity to be our local ASHRAE President.
2023-24 SD Chapter RP Campaign

Lucy's Engineering Adventure
ASHRAE SD members,
I wanted to share with you all the link to a google sheet where you can sign up for the volunteer events, I talked about a couple weeks ago. If you missed that email blast, there is a recap below. As it stands right now, we could use some help to fill the February 13th event. There is also one day where we have two events going, so we could really use some help on February 27th as well.
Live Link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QTM1Lco0c8aXAWW-Bb0c63AWZ5Ldsrq3uzyCXCi-Kwc/edit?usp=sharing
Recap:
Thanks to the generous donation by Mechanical Sales South Dakota, the chapter was able to purchase 60 children’s books. The intent is to read them at local schools and leave the book behind for their classrooms/libraries. Lucy’s Engineering Adventure was developed by ASHRAE’s Student Activities Committee as part of their goal to promote and encourage engineering and HVAC&R careers.
I have partnered with other local engineering societies to get into as many schools in the Sioux Metro area as possible. This joint effort has developed a couple opportunities for outreach that I would like to share with you all.
We are asking for volunteers to help us reach the 11 schools that are interested in having us. We will visit one school per week, starting February 8th. The event will be hosted through an afterschool program at the school and will start around 4:00 p.m. each week. The volunteers will break up into smaller groups and read to 25-30 students and then do a short activity with them. The event should only take around an hour, not including travel, set-up, and clean up. There is a lot of good information provided on the signup link as well. Along with these school visits we will be hosting events at the local Siouxland Library locations. That information is also on the sign-up link.
I am very excited about this opportunity, and I hope to see a great presence from our chapter. This is an awesome effort, and the schools are thrilled to have us come and share engineering with the kids. Thank you in advance for your support and time!
PS – You don’t have to be an engineer to participate, we are sharing with kids the excitement of our AEC industry! All our encouraged to help!
Respectfully,
Austin Eigenberg, SD Student Activities Chair

- What help can the chapter or chapter members offer to the Society including but not limited to:
- HVAC system SARS-CoV-2 contamination test results,
- Success stories of how the chapter or its members have helped the community cope with the pandemic?

SD ASHRAE Basecamp Sign-up
ASHRAE has provided Cloud space for all the Chapters called Basecamp. I have set up our Chapter's site under "ASHRAE Chapter - South Dakota". It will be the location where we plan on saving all the Chapter's documentation including BluePrints, Meeting Programs, BOG meeting Notes, ect... It will also be a location for all the Chairs to keep their individual administration items so it can then be easily passed on to the next Chairperson. The only down side on using this service is everyone has administrative rights so you are able to delete items - please be wary of how you use this cloud space. I believe it will be a great way of storing information for us and it has a backup system built in. Using this is more straightforward than trying to upload data to our current webpage. The SD ASHRAE webpage does have links to our Basecamp Site to retrieve archived items and you will need to be registered to access the site. This LINK will take you to the below page to register yourself and to create a password. Please keep this in a secure location for future use.

April 2020 SD ASHRAE Meeting - Cancellation
Due to the COVAT-19 outbreak Society has cancelled all travel for society/regional leadership and distinguished lecturers. As a result we do not have a DL for our April technical session or meeting. Additionally, with the encouragement of social isolation and our April meeting being student and past presidents night, which is historically well attended, the Board of Governors has decided to cancel our April meeting. Planning for our Golf Outing in May will continue; we will keep you updated on it as this unfolds.
Mike Hubbard, Chapter President
2019 ASHRAE Shoot

2018-19 Chapter Summary
Dear SD ASHRAE Members.

Highlights of last year include as 34% increase in student membership over 2017-18 numbers, a strong and active YEA group that represents 22% of our membership, and exceeding our RP fund raising goal by 7.9%. Additionally, our Chapter hosted the Fall 2018 CRC, which was attended by almost 100 members from Chapters across our Region. Last but not least our Government Advocacy Committee continues to lobby local appointed and elected officials to adopt and enforce an energy code.
As you can see in the attached report our challenges as a Chapter continue to be declining membership and meeting attendance.
Our first Chapter Meeting will be September 11 at The Country Club of Sioux Falls. Social hour starts at 11:45 AM; lunch and technical presentation begin at 12:00 PM. A registration notice will be sent out as we get closer to the date.
Thank you to all who participate and make this a great Chapter to be a part of.

Hello and pre-welcome to the 2018 Region IX CRC. We are looking forward to your visit and stay in Sioux Falls. Just a few last-minute items before your arrival. The Hilton Garden Inn does have a free shuttle service if you need a ride to the hotel from the airport. Just call the hotel once you arrive (605) 444-4700. Lyft is also available in Sioux Falls. It is a short 10-minute ride to the Hotel from the Airport.
There have also been a couple minor modifications to the schedule. I have included a revised schedule but it will also be included in your registration packet.
Once you arrive, you will find the registration desk in the Lobby on Wednesday night (from 4-6pm) and then in the Convention area of the Hotel on Thursday & Friday (follow the signs).
Also, if you will be bringing along additional family members they are welcome to join the group evening events at no additional charge. Please just let the CRC registration desk know how many will be attending.
Safe travels!
CRC Reminder
CRC is almost here and there is still an opportunity to Register or even do a few Ala Carte items. If you do choose to only do Ala Carte items PLEASE add or include a ticket under "Local SD Members & Guests Only (Not registering but only Ala Carte Items)" along with your other individual items. Please consider even just coming to the Welcome party on Thursday evening & the President's lunch on Friday to listen to Sheila Hayter our new National ASHRAE President.
CRC Reminder
First, the bad news. This is likely the last time that a small ASHRAE Chapter like South Dakota, will ever get to host an ASHRAE CRC (Chapter Regional Conferences). Traditional CRCs are being replaced with a “Super CRC”, where several regions combine and have the meeting at a larger city.
The good news is that the SD Chapter gets to be a part of ASHRAE history in hosting this final CRC. The SD CRC committee has been working hard to make sure it is a memorable one! Please see the attached brochure for all the great things we have planned, but here are some of the highlights:
- Hosted at the Sheraton Garden Inn where you and your family are walking difference from Falls Park, Museums, and all the other wonderful sites along the riverfront.
- Welcome party at the Sheraton followed up by a Sioux Falls Canaries baseball game.
- Infamous Nebraska Hospitality Suite all 3 nights!
- Friday luncheon featuring ASHRAE President Sheila Hayter. She has family connections to South Dakota as both her grandfather, and father, worked at South Dakota State University.
- Technical sessions where you can earn CE hours, and learn about the latest developments in intelligent building design.
- Dinner at Falls Park Overlook Café, followed by the ultimate block party experience as DTSF puts on their signature event on the First Friday of the month.
- And most importantly, the chance to network with ASHRAE members from South Dakota, Region IX, and Society.
So please join us in making this final CRC memorable! Also, note the following deadlines:
- Reduced registration rate for ASHRAE Region IX CRC ends June 30. (SD ASHRAE Registration web site)
- Reduced ASHRAE rates at the Hilton Garden Inn ends July 2. (Hotel Reservations - Hilton Garden Inn)
Finally, let’s all take this opportunity to invite potential ASHRAE members to our CRC. While they won’t be able to register as a member (receiving discounted pricing and the welcome basket that is stuffed full of SD treasures), they can still sign up for individual events. What better way to introduce someone to the benefits of ASHRAE membership, then to take them to a CRC.
Sincerely yours,
Kasey Abbott Co-Chair
ASHRAE SD Members Only - CRC Registration
August 2-4th will be here before we know it. Please consider registering early (before June 30th) so we can get a better idea of the number of poeple that will be attending plus knowing qty for pre-ordering items.
Again, in order to make it as accesible as possible to our members, we are offering a $0 registration with just Ala Carte items available. Would be great to have as many members as possible sign up for the full registration but if you would have conflicts it would be appreciated if you would consider making as many of the events as possible. C-PACE Legislation 2017
There's an effort underway to get commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) legislation passed here in SD during the 2018 legislative session. It's essentially a way for owners of agricultural, commercial, industrial & non-profit properties to use this finance energy and water conservation projects as well as renewable energy systems.
The BOG is sending this out to make the Chapter aware of the legistlation and to see if we should back the Legislation. To that end, I'm also attaching a copy of a draft 4-page brochure which provides a little more info about SD-PACE and how it works and also a copy of the current draft of the bill. You can also find more info at the website https://www.sd-pace.org/ or at http://pacenation.us/.

I wanted to pass on to the ASHRAE community that one of our founding members, Ray Roby, passed away the other day. This link will direct you to his Obituary with details for visitation & his funeral (Obituary). I also discovered a great article done by Bob King back in 2000 on our Webpage under the History tab summarizing the start of our Chapter and the mention of Ray Roby as a founding member (History of SD Chapter of ASHRAE).
